STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF INDONESIA 24th SESSION OF THE WORKING GROUP ON UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW CONSIDERATION OF THE NATIONAL REPORT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA *

Mr. President,

Indonesia would like to thank the delegation of the Republic of Latvia, for their comprehensive national report and continued engagement in the UPR process. We appreciate Latvia’s initiatives in involving the Ombudsman Office and Non-Governmental Organization to review the draft of its National Report.

Indonesia recognizes the progress taken by the Government of Latvia in several fields of human rights since the first cycle of the UPR, despite the absence of a National Action Plan for Human Rights. In this light, we recommend the Government of Latvia to develop and implement a National Action Plan for Human Rights to further ensure a systematic and comprehensive approach to the promotion and protection of human rights. In addition, we encourage the Government of Latvia to engage civil societies in the process.

Mr. President,

Our delegation takes note that the existence of foreign population is prominent in Latvia and would like to recommend the Government of Latvia to consider its accession to the Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Member of Their Families.

In addition, we also would like to recommend the Government of Latvia to continue and enhance its efforts to ensure the full implementation of the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Mr. President,

To conclude, Indonesia would like to offer its best wishes to the Government and people of Latvia in their future endeavors towards the promotion and protection of human rights at all levels.

Thank you.

Geneva, 26 January 2016

* delivered by the delegation of Indonesia, Mr. Sulaiman Syarif, Deputy-Director for Human Rights, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Indonesia.
