STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF INDONESIA 23RD SESSION OF THE WORKING GROUP ON UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW CONSIDERATION OF THE UPR REPORT OF SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE *
My delegation would like to welcome the Delegation of Sao Tome and Principe, and thanks them for the comprehensive presentation of their national report.
Indonesia commends the works done by the Government of Sao Tome and Principe in advancing the promotion and protection of human rights in the country and the continued engagement with the UPR Process.
Indonesia notes a number of measures taken by the Government of Sao Tome and Principe to manage the risk of exploitation of migrants. However, we believe that further efforts can be done, including by strengthening legal frameworks. In this regard, we recommend the Government of Sao Tome and Principe to continue its efforts to ratify the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICRMW).
Indonesia also takes note the Government of Sao Tome and Principe’s efforts to eradicate acts of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in the country, through inter alia revision of its Penal Code and adoption of the Law on the Judiciary System. In this regard, Indonesia also wishes to recommend the Government of Sao Tome and Principe to continue its efforts to ratify the Convention against Torture (CAT).
Finally, we wish the Government and People of Sao Tome and Principe all the best in their ongoing and future endeavors in the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.
I thank you.
